Artists' Studio Open House

Every year, on the first Saturday of December, area artists open their studios to visitors, offering them a glimpse into their creative processes and works. This year, on December 7, 10:00am-5:00pm, visitors can explore galleries and workspaces in the Lindsborg and Marquette area while immersing themselves in art, music, and engaging conversations.

Visitors will have the opportunity to meet artists working in various mediums, ranging from ceramics to copper enamel, bookmaking to stained glass, and quilts to gouache painting.

The Christmas Artists' Studio Open House will feature over 30 participating artists in many galleries and studios. This annual event provides a unique and special opportunity to discover and collect Christmas gifts for everyone. The Open House brochure can be obtained at the Red Barn Studio Museum,

212 S. Main Street, and other participating venues on December 7.

Sponsoring organizations for Christmas Artists' Studio Open House are the Raymer Society, the Lindsborg Arts Council, and, of course, Lindsborg area artists.

St. Lucia Festival - A Little Sweden Christmas Tradition

The Lindsborg Saint Lucia Festival is a beautiful celebration during the holiday season, celebrated on Saturday, December 14. Hosted by the Lindsborg Swedish Folk Dancers , the day will be full of dancing and tradition. The schedule for the day includes:

10:15: Lindsborg Swedish Folk Dancers and Soderstrom 4th Grade students performing downtown
11:00am: Procession of dancers to Bethany Lutheran Church, 320 N. Main Street
11:30: Soderstrom 4th Grade St. Lucia music service at Bethany Lutheran Church with reception following
1:30pm: Lindsborg Swedish Folk Dancers and Lindsborg Folkdanslag perform on the lawn of Bethany Lutheran Church
3:00pm: St. Lucia service with Lindsborg Swedish Folk Dancers at Bethany Lutheran Church with reception following

Lindsborg Swedish Folk Dancers will also be hosting a Swedish bake sale in the Courtyard Gallery from 10:00am-2:00pm with all proceeds being donated, in the true Saint Lucia custom of giving to others. This years' recipient is Grant's Grace. Grant's Grace is an endowment fund set up in memory of Grant Lysell-Alkire. The endowment fund was set up to help students in need within the community. The fund helps pay student medical bills, student academic and sports activity fees, those with food and bedding needs, and gifts for families struggling during the holidays.

Food

The best start to an adventure is finding new restaurants to try. While in Wellington, it’s a must that you stop at Travelin’ Smoke BBQ in the downtown area. What began as a food truck is now thriving in their brick-and-mortar location since 2019. Travelin’ Smoke is known for high-quality smoked meats and homemade sides. Festivals

Wellington is home to the annual Wheat Festival the second week in July. This 5-day festival will take place on July 9-13, 2024. This festival includes bands, street dancing, a parade, a car show, a carnival, art, food trucks and more. A unique button can be purchased for $4 to enter attendees into events, prize drawings and contests.

Fun

If you’re looking for Wellington history, check out Chisholm Trail Museum . Explore the early days and arrival of the first pioneer families to the Wellington area with three floors of over 20,000 artifacts. Built in 1916 as the Hatcher Hospital and closing its doors after 48 years in 1964, the family graciously donated the building to the Chisholm Trail Museum in 1965.

To keep the fun going, head over to The Panhandle Railroad Museum for railroad memorabilia. This collection is from PH Wiley from his 27 year career as an engineer on the Santa Fe Railroad. Explore various memorabilia such as furniture, uniforms, clocks and watches.

8 Wonders of Kansas

Half of the 8 Wonders of Kansas are South Central cities. Visit the world’s largest hand-dug well in Greensburg when you visit the Big Well Museum . Travel 109 feet deep into what took almost two years to hand dig. Or you can challenge yourself to go 650 feet underground at Strataca , the underground salt museum in Hutchinson . Once you’re finished mining for salt, head over to Cosmosphere with an amazing collection of U.S. and Russian space artifacts. After all that adventure, check out the Flint Hills in Chase County.

Starting with South Central architecture , the Chase County Courthouse is known for its French Renaissance style. This courthouse is known for being one of the oldest in Kansas. This path winds along the base of the dam in a heavily wooded area with creeks and is filled with wildlife. You’ll often see deer, rabbits and a wide variety of birds along the trail.

Smoky Valley Arts and Folklife Center, in partnership with The Raymer Society, will host an exhibit by Bethany College alumna Donna J. Wilson. Wilson is excited to announce her return to the art scene with a retrospective exhibition of her work from February 1st through March 5th. Join us for a reception on Sunday, February 5th, from 2-4 pm.

Wilson, who graduated with a BFA in 1971 from Bethany, has deep roots in the Lindsborg community, having moved back to Lindsborg in 1973 and never leaving. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Wilson’s work was featured in Kansas regional juried shows in Lindsborg and artist shows at the Sandzen Gallery, Wichita, and Salina. Her last showing was with Dan Mason and friends at the Sandzen Gallery in 2003. However, life took over, and her paintings and wallpaper business became her only artistic outlet.

Four years ago, Wilson picked up her paintbrush once again and started exploring new mediums such as yard art and composite pieces. Her love of vintage hats led her to create personalized hat stands. Now, she is returning to her fine art roots with a focus on animals, flowers, and people.

The exhibition will feature a selection of Wilson’s work from the 1970s to the present day. The public is invited to attend the opening reception on Sunday, February 5th, from 2 -4 pm. The exhibition will run From February 1st through March 5th.

Roosevelt at the Old Mill and Swedish Heritage Museum

This special temporary exhibit – in 22 panels – tells the story of the youngest person to ever assume the U.S. Presidency, using pictures and Theodore Roosevelt’s own writings. The exhibition is housed in the Swedish Pavilion at the Lindsborg Old Mill & Swedish Heritage Museum and runs until March 30.

At first glance, the pairing of President Theodore Roosevelt and Lindsborg might not seem an obvious one. Looking into the history, however, reveals a number of times where the thread of his life became interwoven with that of the City and the Swedish Pavilion. Roosevelt visited Lindsborg twice in his lifetime (in 1900 and 1912). In 1904 he selected the Swedish Pavilion – the historic building that still stands on the museum grounds and that houses the exhibition – as one of just a few stops he selected among the international exhibitions on display during the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis.

The exhibition is included with each museum admission. The museum is celebrating 150 years with a Buy One Get One museum admission coupon. Find the coupon here under the tab Plan Your Visit.

The Lindsborg Old Mill & Swedish Heritage Museum celebrates and preserves the pioneering spirit of the Smoky Valley by educating, entertaining, and building community across generations so that history comes to life. The museum is open Monday - Saturday 9:00am-5:00pm.

This March, you can celebrate the annual Lindsborg Våffeldagen (“voh-full-doggen”), which is Swedish for Waffle Day. This yearly Scandinavian tradition ushers in the Spring season. Head to Lindsborg to enjoy hot waffles and treats for their 14th celebration on Saturday, March 23.

The day consists of a full day of eating waffles, singing waffle songs and wearing waffle t-shirts, garments and accessories. While you’re in Lindsborg, shop at local stores, galleries and coffee shops such as Blacksmith Coffee Shop & Roastery . There will be waffle games, crafts and jokes. This is a can’t-miss event.
